Schedule of Events

We have scheduled a great comics weekend for June 14th, 15th and 16th! There are also a great deal of events taking place around the city in the month of June we didn’t organize, but are connected to CAKE. Here are the events taking place between now and CAKE, some planned by us, some planned by others.

Thursday, June 13

BusyBeaver_CAKE_zines2 Mini-Comic Release Party
Busy Beaver Button Co. & CAKE worked with comics artists, Lale Westvind and Carrie Vinarsky, to each create a 500-piece edition of a 6-8-page comic with a button pinned onto the inside back page. A circle die cut through the center of each comic allows the button to interact with each page. The event will feature a free sampling of the acclaimed eatery’s menu, free beer from Brooklyn Brewery, and the first 100 guests will receive a free issue of the limited edition mini-comic!

Do you need to do last minute preparations for CAKE? Spudnik Press is graciously opening up their studio Friday during the day to give you a space to get work done. Fees are reduced to member-level prices!

Alternative comics legend, Kim Deitch, will be signing at Chicago Comics (just blocks from where CAKE will take place) Friday night. This is the first official evening event for CAKE.

uglystepsister Modern Storytellers Exhibit
Curated by Andrew Ek, and featuring art from CAKE exhibitors Marnie Galloway and Tyrell Cannon.
Painting, illustration, multimedia and assemblage is the focus of, ”Modern Storytellers.” 12 artists working in different mediums and at various stages of their careers come together in this group show of affordable small works.

Come to Quimby’s the night before the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo to meet three of the most exciting alternative comics makers working today. Michael DeForge (Very Casual, Koyama Press), Lisa Hanawalt (My Dirty Dumb Eyes, Drawn & Quarterly), and Patrick Kyle (Black Mass) will be signing their graphic novels and minicomics as part of the official festivities surrounding CAKE.

The Comic Art Battle pits teams of ferocious comics artists against each other in a knock-out, drag-down frenzy of improvised gags, comics strips and chaos. Hosted by its founder, Ezra Claytan Daniels, this battle will feature a match-up between Chicago’s favorite comic book sons and daughters against an all-star coalition of visiting comics makers. It’s Chicago vs. the world! You wont want to miss it!

Bisexual Comic Book Event
The Bisexual Queer Alliance Chicago and Chicago Bisexual Queer Meetup are hosting a comic book event on June 15 at The Center on Halsted to coincide with the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE). The featured speaker will be Northwest Press publisher Charles “Zan” Christensen, editor of the forthcoming anthology Anything That Loves. Other guests may appear as well! This event is open to the public, held in the SAGE space.
