Join Us for CAKE Bake, Our Annual Fundraiser Auction!

March 25, 2015By Matt BradyCAKE

CAKE is gearing up for its third annual fundraiser auction, this year called CAKE Bake! The CAKE Bake will be held on Saturday, April 25th, at NO NATION, located at 1542 N Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park. As in previous CAKE auctions, the fantastic Chicago cartoonist, filmmaker, and stalwart Lyra Hill will be hosting the event and acting as a host and live auctioneer. The auction will also include comics readings by some of the great talent in Chicago’s comics scene. The CAKE auction is always one of the biggest boosts for CAKE’s finances every year, and it’s made possible by the support we receive from Chicago’s great cartoonists!

About 20 to 30 pieces of art will be auctioned live, and the remainder of the the donated artwork will be included in a silent auction, which is a new addition to this year’s event.  We’re including the silent auction as a way to shorten the live auction, with the hopes of making the bidding more exciting for the audience.

CAKE is a volunteer-run, non-profit event, and all funds raised at the CAKE Bake will go towards making 2015’s CAKE the best event possible. This year, CAKE was able to bring out spectacular Special Guests such as Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Eleanor Davis, Jillian Tamaki, and Dash Shaw, as well as expand our programming lineup to include workshops for exhibitors and the general public. Your support allows us to continue to expand and evolve the show, and we thank you for your continued interest in CAKE!

January 23, 2015By Matt BradyCAKE, Programming

We’ve got some exciting plans for CAKE 2015, including programming featuring out special guests and hands-on workshops that will let attendees join in the comics-making process. Here’s what we’ve got planned:

Programming

Jamieandgilbert

Comic Books and Speculative Fiction – A roundtable discussion of how comics fits into the New Wave of speculative fiction that began in the 1960s with writers like J.G. Ballard, Samuel Delaney, Harlan Ellison, Ursula K. LeGuin, and Octavia Butler.

Comics in Cyberspace – A discussion of the relationship between webcomics and traditional print comics, looking at the different means of distribution now available, from Tumblr to ebooks.

The Real Truth – Three cartoonists will discuss creative nonfiction, creating comics that reflect the details of everyday life, and the ethics and challenges of writing about real people, from friends and family to historical figures.

We’ll be announcing more exciting programming soon!

We have some exciting plans, including expanding  our programming to include workshops, and (drumroll please) streaming our programming  online with the help of Windy City Television! We’ll be announcing more information about our plans later this week (follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr to stay up to date!). Want a hint? How about a workshop on printing techniques with Anya Davidson and a live drawing demonstration from Jaime Hernandez? That’s just the tip of the iceberg of what we’ve got planned!

CAKE 2015: 2 Days Left to Apply!

December 13, 2014By Matt BradyCAKE

The deadline for the exhibitor application for CAKE 2015 is on Monday, December 15th, meaning there are only two days left to apply. If you’re still planning to apply, please do so at http://www.cakechicago.com/2015-cake-exhibitor-application

If you’re still deciding whether you want to apply, Keith Herzik, an exhibitor at CAKE 2014, described his experience for us:

“Cake is a fun time!

“I feel like I heard ‘Man, I didn’t know what to expect…this is great!’ Over and over.

“I like the mix of people that come out to support the scene. Here are a few examples:

  • The excited young, looking to stay hip to new art and artists and opportunities
  • The experienced old, looking to see what looks familiar to them from when they were hip
  • The parents bringing children to stimulate their minds
  • The fellow artists
  • Out-of-towners!

“I love matching faces and personalities of artists to their art, with everyone in the same room breathing the same air .

“Two great memories for me are:

  1. The meeting and trading of zines with a knowledgeable collector. He came around on all of the days with alternative and underground books from the nineteen seventies; the nineteen eighties; the nineteen  nineties .  I hope I can be as cool and encouraging  someday.
  2. Also the meeting my future employer is a highlight. Currenty she is probably around five years old…a really excited little girl who ran to my table (accompanied by her parents) and squealed with delight at my colorful cartoons (she liked the newest issue of my series !). I heard: ‘Now honey, remember we said we could only pick out one thing to buy today…’ ( I nodded and winked back at the father as they prepared to leave my table after looking just about everything over) ‘We are still looking around…’ Far out!   Thirty five minutes later the little darling came back and bought the book that made her squeal so much. Thank you!

” Yipes! I better get some new stuff to sell!”

If you need some motivation to apply, here’s Jo Dery, who exhibited at CAKE 2014 and participated on a panel about animation. She also provided the official art for CAKE 2013. Jo had the following to say about CAKE:

“The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo embodies many things I deeply believe in: community, DIY culture, experimentation, thinking, making, and most importantly — sharing! The pleasure of participating in CAKE is something I look forward to each year. It is a celebration!”

CAKE 2015: 4 Days Left to Apply!

December 11, 2014By Matt BradyCAKE

The application for CAKE 2015 exhibitors will be closing on Monday, December 15th, meaning there are only four days left. If you still need to apply, please go to http://www.cakechicago.com/2015-cake-exhibitor-application

If you’re still not sure whether you want to apply, here’s cartoonist Matt Davis describing the CAKE experience:

“10,000 cartoonists perform the Garfield & Friends theme song in imperfect unison on kazoo — It’s your 8th birthday; you’ve had way too much coffee and you’ve just found out that not only is George Herriman is alive, but he is your uncle and he is coming to help out with the pinata. Lynda Barry gives you a back massage while you hold forth on design and aesthetics to a captivated audience of 900 Chris Wares. There’s $999,999,997 in your bank account and you don’t need a cent of it because you just spent three bucks on a minicomic and it’s so great sososo great the only thing you’ll ever need for ever and ever forever again. CAKE Chicago.”
