Join CAKE and Spudnik for Free Comic Book Day!

April 27, 2015

FCBD Extravaganza

This Saturday, May 2, is Free Comic Book Day, and CAKE and Spudnik Press invite you to join us for a drop-in comics workshop! The event will be taking place at the Spudnik Press Cooperative, located at 1821 W Hubbard, Suite 302, in Chicago, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

For a suggested donation of $10, you can join the workshop, which is open to all people of all ages, identities, and experience levels. You’ll be able to make your own “Comics Handbook” using templates and drawing prompts provided by Spudnik and CAKE, along with a lavish selection of papers and Spudnik’s resident photocopier. Select the prompts that strike your fancy, pick out papers that inspire you to draw, and design your own cover. Then bring these elements together with a spiral binding, staples, or hand-sewn butterfly stitch, and trim to any dimension you like with Spudnik’s fun and friendly electric guillotine.

Attendees will also get to collaborate with friends and strangers to create a one-page jam comic, using all sorts of mark making implements (pencil, pens, ink, and more). Then learn how to reproduce this work using a Risograph machine, one of the many unique tools housed at Spudnik Press Cooperative. Everyone who contributes will get to take home a limited-edition jam comic.

While you’re there, be sure to pick up the Free Comic Book Day comic created by CAKE’s organizers!

This is a drop-in, all-ages donation-based workshop. Proceeds to benefit CAKE and Spudnik. No RSVP required.

We hope to see you this Saturday! If you have any questions, please contact us.

Join Us for CAKE Bake, Our Annual Fundraiser Auction!

March 25, 2015

CAKE is gearing up for its third annual fundraiser auction, this year called CAKE Bake! The CAKE Bake will be held on Saturday, April 25th, at NO NATION, located at 1542 N Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park. As in previous CAKE auctions, the fantastic Chicago cartoonist, filmmaker, and stalwart Lyra Hill will be hosting the event and acting as a host and live auctioneer. The auction will also include comics readings by some of the great talent in Chicago’s comics scene. The CAKE auction is always one of the biggest boosts for CAKE’s finances every year, and it’s made possible by the support we receive from Chicago’s great cartoonists!

About 20 to 30 pieces of art will be auctioned live, and the remainder of the the donated artwork will be included in a silent auction, which is a new addition to this year’s event.  We’re including the silent auction as a way to shorten the live auction, with the hopes of making the bidding more exciting for the audience.

CAKE is a volunteer-run, non-profit event, and all funds raised at the CAKE Bake will go towards making 2015’s CAKE the best event possible. This year, CAKE was able to bring out spectacular Special Guests such as Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Eleanor Davis, Jillian Tamaki, and Dash Shaw, as well as expand our programming lineup to include workshops for exhibitors and the general public. Your support allows us to continue to expand and evolve the show, and we thank you for your continued interest in CAKE!

If you’re still deciding whether you want to apply, Keith Herzik, an exhibitor at CAKE 2014, described his experience for us:

“Cake is a fun time!

“I feel like I heard ‘Man, I didn’t know what to expect…this is great!’ Over and over.

“I like the mix of people that come out to support the scene. Here are a few examples:

  • The excited young, looking to stay hip to new art and artists and opportunities
  • The experienced old, looking to see what looks familiar to them from when they were hip
  • The parents bringing children to stimulate their minds
  • The fellow artists
  • Out-of-towners!

“I love matching faces and personalities of artists to their art, with everyone in the same room breathing the same air .

“Two great memories for me are:

  1. The meeting and trading of zines with a knowledgeable collector. He came around on all of the days with alternative and underground books from the nineteen seventies; the nineteen eighties; the nineteen  nineties .  I hope I can be as cool and encouraging  someday.
  2. Also the meeting my future employer is a highlight. Currenty she is probably around five years old…a really excited little girl who ran to my table (accompanied by her parents) and squealed with delight at my colorful cartoons (she liked the newest issue of my series !). I heard: ‘Now honey, remember we said we could only pick out one thing to buy today…’ ( I nodded and winked back at the father as they prepared to leave my table after looking just about everything over) ‘We are still looking around…’ Far out!   Thirty five minutes later the little darling came back and bought the book that made her squeal so much. Thank you!

” Yipes! I better get some new stuff to sell!”
