CAKE 2015: 4 Days Left to Apply!

December 11, 2014By Matt BradyCAKE

The application for CAKE 2015 exhibitors will be closing on Monday, December 15th, meaning there are only four days left. If you still need to apply, please go to http://www.cakechicago.com/2015-cake-exhibitor-application

If you’re still not sure whether you want to apply, here’s cartoonist Matt Davis describing the CAKE experience:

“10,000 cartoonists perform the Garfield & Friends theme song in imperfect unison on kazoo — It’s your 8th birthday; you’ve had way too much coffee and you’ve just found out that not only is George Herriman is alive, but he is your uncle and he is coming to help out with the pinata. Lynda Barry gives you a back massage while you hold forth on design and aesthetics to a captivated audience of 900 Chris Wares. There’s $999,999,997 in your bank account and you don’t need a cent of it because you just spent three bucks on a minicomic and it’s so great sososo great the only thing you’ll ever need for ever and ever forever again. CAKE Chicago.”

The Fourth Annual Chicago Alternative Comics Expo will take place on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N Halsted Ave. If you have any questions about CAKE, please contact us.

CAKE 2015: 5 Days Left to Apply!

December 10, 2014By Matt BradyCAKE

The deadline to apply as an exhibitor for CAKE 2015 is on December 15th, which is only five days away. If you haven’t yet done so, you can apply at http://www.cakechicago.com/2015-cake-exhibitor-application

If you’re still pondering your decision whether to apply, here’s a note from Caitlin McGurk, of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, about her experience at CAKE 2014. Caitlin interviewed Tony Millionaire for one of the panels, and she had the following to say to Tom Spurgeon of The Comics Reporter about the weekend:

“I like CAKE! No in fact, I love CAKE. Few other American comics shows come to mind (other than Short Run, perhaps) where I have felt energized the entire time by the homegrown, we-can-do-this-if-we-try attitude that their entire organization is fueled by.  Young fans and cartoonists that are clearly dedicating themselves to this year after year just out of the love of it, and have rather impressively pulled off a professional and well-oiled-machine within only 3 years of operating. Their website is tight and cohesive. Their programming is original, satisfying without being overly-ambitious or packed in, and doesn’t just cater to big names but exposing lesser-known folks.

“And speaking of panels, they are the only indie comics show that I am aware of (and please correct me if I’m wrong) who actually PAY their moderators. As someone who is frequently asked to moderate or interview folks for part of a conventions programming, I know just how much time, energy, and cash (from purchasing the artists’ books) goes into researching and preparing for that kind of event, and it’s an enormous help to be passed $100 or so as a sign of thanks and appreciation. Especially for those of us who moderate but otherwise have no place at a convention beyond being a fan and picking up work.

“Unfortunately, I can’t speak to how the sales were, as I haven’t tabled at CAKE, but late-Saturday and throughout Sunday seemed fairly busy, and morale remained high. Both the programming venue and the exhibitor areas are beautiful, well-lit, comfortable and well located in a friendly neighborhood with plenty of good food. The after parties are always a blast, and it’s nice to go to a convention where basically everyone at the show actually does go to the official after-party, rather than dispersing throughout small parties in the city. In short, keep doin’ it right guys. And thanks for another great festival.”

CAKE is thrilled to announce that Jillian Tamaki will be a Special Guest for CAKE 2015. Jillian is a Canadian illustrator and cartoonist. Her illustrations have won gold medals from the Society of Illustrators and the Society of Publication Designers. Jillian is the co-creator of the graphic novel SKIM (with Mariko Tamaki), which was listed as one of the New York Times‘ Best Illustrated Books of 2008 and was nominated for four Eisner Awards and a Governor General’s Literary Award. Her second collaborative work with Mariko Tamaki, the graphic novel This One Summer, was a New York Times Bestseller and won the 2014 Governor General’s Award. Jillian’s three books of personal work are Gilded Lilies (2006), Indoor Voice (2010), and SuperMutant Magic Academy, which will debut at CAKE 2015. The hilarious SuperMutant Magic Academy draws from Jillian’s Ignatz Award-winning webcomic and concludes the story of life at the academy. You can learn more about Jillian at her website and on Twitter.

CAKE’s organizers have long been in awe of Jillian’s illustration talent, which brings an astoundingly beautiful naturalism to the environments and characters in her comics. The graphic novels she has created with her cousin Mariko Tamaki feature some of the best examples of well-defined young female characters in contemporary literature (either graphic or prose), and her solo work on SuperMutant Magic Academy is not only a hilarious take on the tropes of teenagers with superpowers, but also contains plenty of sharp cultural commentary and fascinating explorations of adolescent emotions. We’re incredibly proud to have Jillian join us for CAKE 2015, and we’re excited to share her amazing work with her present and future fans in Chicago.

CAKE 2015 Special Guest Announcement: Zak Sally!

zaksally

CAKE is excited to announce that Zak Sally will be a Special Guest for CAKE 2015! Zak is a writer, musician, educator, and cartoonist who has been prominent in the world of independent comics for more than a decade. He is most well known for his Sammy The Mouse series (published by Fantagraphics, La Mano, and Uncivilized Books), as well as the Eisner-nominated Recidivist, of which the 4th volume was just released. You can find out more about Zak at his website, on Twitter, and on Facebook. You could also listen to this interview with Zak Sally on the Comics Alternative Podcast, or this interview conducted by Tom Spurgeon at the Comics Reporter.

recidivist4

Zak Sally has been making comics for 30 years, having made his first mini comic when he was 13 years old. In the intervening years he has been a line cook, a dishwasher, a “professional musician” (in minimalist rock band Low), had a bit part in a Steve Martin movie, written for the Village Voice, sold the dyed t shirts on Telegraph Ave, taught college courses in comics (even though he barely made it through high school), started his own art school (Schoolhaus/A4, with Dan Ibarra of Aesthetic Apparatus), been a correspondent for ABC news online, and founded La Mano, an award winning micro press where the DIY/handmade ethic is taken beyond any sane and reasonable bounds. He is the cartoonist behind Recidivist and Sammy The Mouse, and might be working on a novel right now. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife and 2 kids.

lamano

CAKE organizers are proud to welcome Zak as a special guest. He is a hard-working and admired comics maker, and his small press, La Mano, stands as a paragon of independent publishing. In addition to his immediate work in comics, we are excited by his commitment to interdisciplinary comics education with Schoolhaus. We see his commitment to alternative comics as an inspiring force, which stretches to our collective past and connects to the future of the medium. We’re also looking forward to hearing him and his band play while he is in town! We couldn’t be happier to have him join us as a part of CAKE 2015.

The brothers have also been recognized for a number of awards, including Ignatz, Harvey, and Eisner awards for Jaime and a PEN Center Graphic Literature Award for Outstanding Body of Work, a Society of Illustrators Silver Medal, and an Eisner award for Gilbert. We are very excited to hear that Ofelia, the latest collection of Gilbert’s stories from Love and Rockets, will be coming out in January 2015, and Love and Rockets New Stories no. 7, the latest entry in the brothers’ long running-series, will be coming out in February 2015.
