CAKE DEBUT: The Anthropologists by Whit Taylor

May 9, 2014By NeilCAKE, Debuts, Exhibitors

The Anthropologists by Whit Taylor

The Anthropologists follows the author’s trip to Australia and subsequent reevaluation of her chosen field of study. Taylor’s expressive line work and analysis of the strange intersection of self as a person of color, a tourist and a scholar of Aboriginal culture make for an engrossing, thought-provoking read.
The Anthropologists is the second book in the Sparkplug Minis Series, a collection of limited-edition minicomics by fantastic underground artists.

CAKE DEBUT: Rudy by Mark Connery

May 8, 2014By NeilCAKE, Debuts, Exhibitors

RUDY by Mark Connery

Rudy, a collection of over 20 years of zinester/cartoonist/poet/artist Mark Connery’s work of the same name, while having long been a source of inspiration to many a cartoonist, has been largely unknown to those outside of Canada or select circles within comics. Through the help of 2D Cloud and Connery’s friend and fellow great cartoonist from the north, Marc Bell, this great series is being made available for the first time to the world at large!

Getting its start in the ephemeral world of small-run zines and minicomics, Rudy operated at the fringes of the funny animal genre, one of the medium’s oldest, while being informed by an absurdist, poetic sensibility. The humble format of these comics only heightened their impact on those fortunate enough to encounter them in their native context.

Words alone cannot capture the magic that is Rudy, it must be read to be believed!

CAKE DEBUT: The Love Bunglers by Jaime Hernandez

May 5, 2014By NeilCAKE, Debuts, Exhibitors

The Love Bunglers by Jaime Hernandez

The suppression of family history is the initial thread that ties together The Love Bunglers, featuring Hernandez’s longtime Love and Rockets heroine Maggie. Because these secrets can’t be dealt with openly, their lingering effect is even more powerful. But Maggie’s ability to navigate and find meaning in her life — despite losing her culture, her brother, her profession, and her friends — is what’s made her a compelling character. After a lifetime of losses, Maggie finds, in the second half, her longtime off and on lover, Ray Dominguez. In taking us through lives, deaths, and near-fatalities, The Love Bunglers encapsulates Maggie’s emotional history as it moves from resignation to memories of loss, to sudden violence (a theme in this story), and eventually to love and contentment. Much like John Updike in his four Rabbit novels, Jaime Hernandez has been following his longtime character Maggie around for several decades, all of which has seemed to be building towards this book in particular.

Born into the wilderness, she can find no other life, yet is surrounded by the artifacts of its existence: the ruins.
