The Year Of The Beasts, written by Cecil Castellucci (First Day On Earth, Plain Janes) and drawn by Nate Powell (The Silence Of Our Friends, Any Empire, Swallow Me Whole) is a hybrid narrative told with alternating chapters of prose and comics. Sibling rivalry, resentment, loss, sexual awakening, and betrayal hold together parallel worlds and the creatures that inhabit each. (2012, Roaring Brook Press)

His work includes The Silence Of Our Friends, Any Empire, Swallow Me Whole, Please Release, Sounds Of Your Name, It Disappears, Tiny Giants, and the self-published Walkie Talkie series. CAKE DEBUT: Magic Hedge #2 by Marian Runk

May 17, 2012

Marian is excited to debut the second installment of her Ignatz Award nominated autobiographical series “The Magic Hedge,” at CAKE. In addition to examining the familiar subjects of bird-watching, family relationships, queer romance and community, much of Issue #2: Firsts, Seconds, and Endings will return to vivid moments of Marian’s childhood growing up in Dallas, Texas. First Snowy Owl sightings, second words uttered as a toddler, awkward childhood vocabulary mistakes, broken hearts, and childhood mentors lost to the AIDS epidemic are memorialized with love and humor in this new collection.

Marian is a Texan born, Chicago-based cartoonist who loves birds, cats, and country music. The second issue of her Ignatz-nominated comic series, The Magic Hedge, will debut at CAKE. When she’s not at her day job (peddling birth control and promoting safer sex to the Chicagoland area), she’s probably drawing comics, playing guitar, singing in a choir, or watching birds along the shore of Lake Michigan.

Adventure School for Ladies Comics Intensive June 4 – 15

May 11, 2012

CAKE is excited to connect with the Adventure School for Ladies Comics Intensive! Not only is the school taking place leading up to CAKE, Anne Elizabeth Moore is one of our special guests, and she’s bringing her Lady Drawers posse with her! They’ll also be debuting the comic they will be making during the school (more info about both their debut and programming featuring them to come). Here’s some information from the school itself:

The Adventure School for Ladies Comics Intensive will be going down June 4-15 at the Read/Write Library in Chicago and Spudnik Press, right before CAKE, and it will be awesome. Although we are open to collaborators of all genders and identities, we do ask participants be willing to politically align themselves with the female creators that, in comics, make up over 40% of the industry, 60% of the characters pictured sans culottes*, receive aproximately 10% of the paid gigs at mainstream or independent presses (and yet, submit to publishers at the same rates as male creators do.)

If you’re in town before CAKE, come to our Orientation Cocktail Party at Spudnik Press on June 3rd, or check the website for other public events that may come together later. But definitely come visit us at our table, where we’ll have a new, hot-off-the-presses anthology about gender, race, class, and representational theory in comics. In comics!

Wanna better idea of what we do? Here’s a comic that will tell you. Here’s the anthology we made last year, Unladylike. Here’s the Ladydrawers column on Truthout. Our you can follow this Twitter feed, this Tumblr, or read this blog.

May 9, 2012

Police slang for “missing person”, Misper is a new comic from Anthony Meloro that shows brief, dirty glimpses into the lives of two detectives. Taking cues from neo-noir cinema, occult mysticism, and petty offenses, Meloro merges grotesque and banal imagery with criminal acts. The entire comic is screen printed and hand bound.

Anthony Meloro is a Richmond, VA based comic artist.
