The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) is a weekend-long celebration of independent comics, inspired by Chicago’s rich legacy as home to many of underground and alternative comics’ most talented artists– past, present and future. Featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions and more, CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue amongst independent artists, small presses, publishers and readers.
The Rage of Poseidon is a 48 page limited edition accordian book of short stories re-imagining stories and characters from Greek and Christian religious stories. Included are stories about Prometheus, Isaac and Abraham, Jesus and Aphrodite and the Devil as well as the titular Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. The stories are accompanied by silhouetted images of the characters and events depicted. The project evolved out of a series of adaptations for slide readings of short pieces from my sketchbooks, and is being released in conjunction with CAKE and with an exhibition of new drawings by the author, Adam and Eve Sneak Back into the Garden of Eden to Steal More Apples, opening the same weekend at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

Save the date! We are excited to announce the debut of the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (or “CAKE” for short) in the summer of 2012! Taking place June 16th and 17th at Columbia College’s Ludington Building, CAKE is focused on celebrating independent and alternative comics of all stripes.
The festival plans to feature over 100 exhibitors along with a two-day program of signings, panels, workshops and lectures. With Chicago’s long legacy as a stronghold for underground and alternative comics, the Windy City is an ideal locale to showcase some of the most wild, weird and wonderful contemporary comics talent.
Later this month we’ll be unveiling our website (www.cakechicago.com) and publicity images designed by Laura Park. Potential exhibitors can look for our show application and guidelines to be available around Halloween and we’ll be periodically announcing special guests and events as CAKE draws closer.
Until then: make your travel plans, draw that new comic you were thinking of, and try to contain your eager anticipation! See you next summer!
